About

This site is intended to cover a wide range of subjects involving useful philosophy. Useful in the economic sense of the word utility.

To that end, we plan to stick with debates regarding topics that many academics would sneer at, but that will hopefully be useful in informing the opinions of mere mortals like ourselves.

Areas of interest include economics, politics, religion, science, and the places they intersect. Specific news of current public discussion and debate will be more useful to readers, and are thus to be preferred. Related information available from elsewhere on the web is likely to be presented.

In the process, we hope to reason our way together to the truth. It assumed to form the basis of the discussion around here that there is one objective reality and truth.

This is intended to be a spot on the web open to debate and argument about issues. That means publishers and commentators are expected to be able and willing to defend their point of view. Substantiation may be required of commentators, as unsubstantiated opinion is considered a privilege of the host, to be rarely exercised.

It is our policy to never delete or restrict a comment on the basis that the commentator disagrees with a publisher.

Diversity in point of view is encouraged, especially if we don't agree with you. We may sometimes have to agree to disagree, but we'd prefer to keep arguing a topic until we either agree or else have discovered the fundamental assumptions that will prevent us from ever agreeing.

"Come, Let Us Reason Together" is named after a phrase from the most famous, influential and useful philosopher for western society, as recorded by one of my favorites among his representatives.

The Site Logo is the cover of "The Age of Reason" by Thomas Paine, available for free from Project Gutenberg.
